The University of Chester
Higher Education Partner
The University of Chester
has an exemplary record of employer-based learning provision in the
science and manufacturing areas working closely with the
biomedical, chemical and pharmaceutical industries and the National
Health Service.
The Faculty of Applied
Sciences has considerable experience working with employers to
design bespoke curricula at foundation degree (level 4) and above
that is also suitable for continuing professional development
(CPD). These have proved to be highly successful due to the use of
the blended learning models that combine distance learning (virtual
learning environments), work-based learning method and workplace
mentors. We have previously collaborated to develop an industry
focussed modular foundation degree in a range of bioscience and
food science areas. In addition, we have been able to offer a range
of specialist Professional Certificates derived from smaller
numbers of modules from these programmes. All these programmes
enable employees, through work based learning, to gain academic
learning and build-in further work-related studies integral to the
learning environment for the sector.
The admissions criteria
used combined with the development of the programme, enables
learners to access programmes without any formal qualifications and
progress to FdSc. At Post Graduate level, we have recently
introduced a Post Graduate Certificate in Science Communication
delivered via a blended learning approach, suitable for teaching
staff or those wishing to progress a career in science-related
media professions.
